Vir Das Celebrates Emmy Win and Proclaims Shefali Shah as ‘India’s Meryl Streep’ – A Night of Triumph and Praise at International Emmy Awards 2023

The glitzy world of International Emmy Awards 2023 witnessed moments of triumph, heartfelt praise, and a touch of sweet camaraderie. Emmy Award-winning comedian Vir Das, basking in the glory of his win for ‘Vir Das: Landing,’ took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes snapshots, and in the midst of it all, bestowed a lofty title upon the talented Shefali Shah, dubbing her ‘India’s Meryl Streep.’

In a captivating display of camaraderie, Vir Das showcased a side of the awards night that went beyond the glitz and glamour. Among the highlights was his shared moment with fellow nominee Shefali Shah, known for her stellar performance in Delhi Crime. The duo, captured in a candid shot indulging in a delectable dessert, prompted Vir Das to acknowledge Shefali’s acting prowess. He expressed, “I just watched Shefali Shah this whole weekend. She’s India’s Meryl Streep, and I wish she could see the effect she has on people. Credibility meets composure.”

In a reciprocal gesture, Shefali Shah re-shared Vir Das’s post on her Instagram story, playfully expressing anticipation of sharing the awards table once again with Jim Sarbh and cheering for each other. Graciously acknowledging Vir Das’s compliment, she added, “You are too kind, Vir Das.”

For the uninitiated, Shefali Shah, nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress category for her role in Delhi Crime Season 2, faced tough competition but left an indelible mark on the international stage. The award ultimately went to Mexican actor Karla Souza for her outstanding portrayal in La Caida. Jim Sarbh, also in the running for Best Performance by an Actor for Rocket Boys, added to the Indian representation but saw the Emmy go to British actor Martin Freeman.

Vir Das, in a statement post his triumph at the International Emmy Awards, shared, “This award is not just a recognition of my work but a celebration of the diverse stories and voices from India. Stories that make us laugh, reflect, and, most importantly, unite. This one is for India, for Indian comedy, and for the community of artists at large.”
