Cooper vividly remembers his nerve-racking meeting at Beyoncé’s house, where Jay-Z was casually watching “Judge Judy.” Amid his pitch, Cooper struggled with a peculiar cough, adding to the intensity of the moment. Despite the setback, Cooper described Beyoncé as incredible, and the two collaborated on the project for about a year before it fell through.
With Beyoncé out of the picture, Cooper considered Adele for the role, but she proved unavailable. It was only after witnessing Lady Gaga’s breathtaking performance at a benefit concert that Cooper realized she was the perfect fit for the role of Ally. Thus, the journey of “A Star Is Born” with Gaga as the lead began.
The film received critical acclaim, earning eight nominations at the 91st Academy Awards and winning the Best Original Song award for “Shallow,” a powerful duet between Cooper and Gaga. Despite Cooper’s idea of a live reading of the script and singing the songs, featuring at the Hollywood Bowl, not coming to fruition, he and Gaga reunited on the Maestro red carpet in December 2023, showcasing the enduring bond forged during the making of the film.
