King Charles and Queen Camilla Honor Armed Forces Day with New Portrait and Heartfelt Message

In a touching tribute to veterans, serving members, and their families, King Charles and Queen Camilla marked Armed Forces Day with a new official portrait and a heartfelt message. The British royal family took a moment to honor those who serve, sharing their gratitude and respect for the military community.

A Regal Tribute in a New Portrait
On June 29, a new portrait of King Charles was released to commemorate Armed Forces Day. Taken by renowned photographer Hugo Burnand in the Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle in November 2023, the portrait captures the King in his Field Marshal No1 Full Ceremonial Frock Coat, adorned with medals, a sword, and decorations. This image highlights the King’s esteemed position as the head of the Armed Forces and his long-standing dedication to the military.

Burnand, who has a storied history with the royal family, has photographed many of King Charles’ official portraits since he ascended to the throne. His work includes the official coronation portraits and various images used in public institutions across the U.K. His connection with the King dates back to photographing the official portraits at Charles and Camilla’s 2005 wedding, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 nuptials.

Queen Camilla’s Heartfelt Message
Queen Camilla also shared a moving video message, produced by the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), expressing her deep appreciation for the Armed Forces. Filmed in the Morning Room at Clarence House, Camilla wore her Royal Lancers brooch, symbolizing the regiment her father served in and where she is colonel-in-chief. The video showed her beside a photograph of King Charles in his Royal Navy uniform and an image of her parents, Major Bruce Shand and Rosalind Cubitt, on their wedding day.

“I am deeply honored to join you all on Armed Forces Day,” Camilla began. “Whether in this country or overseas, we celebrate the service of the men and women in our military and thank you all for everything you do to protect this country of ours. We also remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of stability and peace around the world.”

Remembering D-Day
Reflecting on a recent trip to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Camilla recalled the bravery of the Allied forces. “We were reminded of the incredible bravery of the Allied land, sea, and air forces whose combined endeavors brought about the liberation of Western Europe and in whose debt we shall forever be,” she said.

Camilla praised the current Armed Forces for continuing that legacy of bravery and dedication. “Eight decades later, I know that that same spirit and those same qualities remain much in evidence throughout our Armed Forces, as you undertake your duties in the face of a multitude of challenges and dangers. In so doing, you not only protect these Isles but also defend liberties way beyond these shores. Your determination, unrelenting efforts, and selfless loyalty to each other and to the United Kingdom are as enduring as our gratitude.”

Saluting Military Families
Queen Camilla didn’t forget to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the families of service members. “I also want to thank your families, who keep the home fires burning, whilst you are deployed overseas. As the proud daughter of an Army officer, I know something of the impact military life has on your loved ones – you too are heroes. In times of war and in times of peace, whether seen or unseen, our Armed Forces support and strengthen our nation. You are a source of inspiration, reassurance, and pride – and I salute you all.”
