• Diana’s sapphire engagement ring, a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire ringed by 14 diamonds, on her hand as she toured the construction site. Estimates put it at £300,000 to £400,000.

The clothes, boots and earrings come to about $6,745. Add the sapphire and the look runs into the hundreds of thousands, before counting any of the eternity bands she usually stacks with it.

The Mail’s version came to £2,135, with no boots, no earrings and no ring but it costs $409,000 to $543,000.
