The Princess and the Philanthropist

A meeting nobody saw

On October 8, 2026, the Princess of Wales sat down with Melinda French Gates for a closed-door working session in London. Nobody outside the room heard about it for almost three weeks.

Kensington Palace released a single photo on October 27: the two women smiling among other attendees, Catherine in a tailored suit and French Gates in burgundy. People placed the meeting at Pivotal’s London offices.

The substance came from an unlikely place: a LinkedIn post by Christian Guy, executive director of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. His account turned a photo op into the outline of a possible partnership between the Royal Foundation and French Gates’s organisation, Pivotal.

What was on the table

The session centred on one idea: that the quality of our relationships shapes health and happiness more than almost anything else. Guy framed it as research that is “profound yet reassuring.”

  • The framework. The discussion focused on the Shaping Us Framework, which Catherine developed with more than 100 human-development experts. The question was how it could guide whole-person development at every life stage, not only early childhood.
  • The partner. Pivotal, founded in 2015, works on social progress for women and young people through philanthropy, investment and advocacy. Its nonprofit arm received $7.9 billion from Bill Gates under the divorce settlement, per a January 2026 tax filing, making it one of America’s largest private foundations (Fortune).
  • The next step. Guy said the Foundation and Pivotal will spend the coming months exploring practical ways to build on the work. Coverage described possible joint projects on young people’s confidence, resilience and sense of belonging (Geo TV). No money or programme has been announced.

This was the third known meeting in 16 months, and the first with a readout.

Is it really a power move?

Royal commentator Daniela Elser says the silence is the point. In her news.com.au column, she argues Catherine now plays two roles: the state-banquet charmer who wins over world leaders, and a serious leader in her own right. Skipping the fanfare around a meeting with one of the world’s richest philanthropists, Elser writes, shows how much weight Catherine now carries.

The record supports part of that. Three meetings in 16 months, each in Catherine’s role as patron of the Royal Foundation, looks like a working relationship rather than a courtesy call. And French Gates now controls one of the largest private foundations in the US, so her time is not handed out lightly.

Two things cut the other way:

  • Quiet is the default. Royal Foundation working meetings are routinely logged only in the Court Circular, as both Windsor meetings were. The October session was actually the most public of the three: it got a photo and a readout.
  • Nothing is committed yet. Guy’s post speaks of exploring and building on the work. There is no funding, programme or timeline. Whether money follows is the real test of influence.

Who else she has met

Catherine is not French Gates’s first royal contact. She has worked with Prince William and with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and her 2026 calendar has run from sports owners to the Smithsonian.

The pattern: she has now worked with both the Wales and Sussex households, a rare position given the rift between them.

Who she could meet next

These are informed guesses based on her existing ties and Pivotal’s focus on women and young people, not reported plans.

  • Wellcome. Pivotal already runs a $100 million research fund with Wellcome Leap, and mental health is one of its first focus areas. That overlaps with the Royal Foundation’s early-years and mental-health work, and Wellcome’s home base is London.
  • Other royal philanthropists. Queen Mary of Denmark’s Mary Foundation works on children’s wellbeing and loneliness, and Queen Rania of Jordan runs an education foundation. Either would fit a cross-border push on child development.
  • The Sussexes. She has already backed a project with Meghan. Any renewed link would be watched closely given the family rift.
  • Sports owners and leagues. Her Kraken partners plan an NBA expansion bid, and she has been named among possible Seahawks buyers (GeekWire). She has said youth access to sport is one of her reasons for investing (Fox 13).
